Pastoral

The pastoral etchings initially began from my interest in the prints made by British 19th Century artist Samuel Palmer and the other artists associated with him who were known as the Ancients. In the 1980s I began to collect Palmers etchings. The collection slowly grew to include other British artists whose work loosely fell into the pastoral or the romantic genre.

The works I collected became a great influence on the etchings I made. Initially I made only a few pastoral etchings each year but this number steadily grew until for many years it became the central focus of my etching output. My interest in this area has now gradually extended into many of my drawings and paintings.

The Temptation of St. Antony

"The large Temptation of St Antony etching is made up of eight panels printed from large zinc etching plates onto rag paper. The work itself took 12 months to complete and draws its references from historical texts and images that record the life of the early Christian saint. These references include Athanasius' third century biography and Martin Schongauer's famous engraving of St Anthony. The first twenty chapters of the biography are written into the sky section of the artwork while the position of the floating saint has many similarities to 15th and 16th Century depictions of St Antony during his trials and tribulations.	I placed my St Antony floating above part of the city of Brisbane where the Atcherley was being demolished. Rake's Progress

"The Rake's progress series was made over a two year period in Brisbane and Townsville. The etchings, like those made by William Hogath in his original series, follow the fate of the "Rake" on his journey through life. Unlike Hogath's narrative, the Rake in my series is a young artist who both observes and participates in events as they unfold in different environments.

As well as recording many local events that occured while I made the series, I included many historical art references that had some way influenced my early artistic development."

From The Suburbs
The suburban etchings have been divided into four categories to make the web site a little more functional but they would work just a well in chronological order. Each of these etchings has its own story whether it was my own experience,

Artist's Studios

These etchings were made from 1993-2003. The first etching was made in David Paulson's studio in inner city Brisbane not far from Fortitude Valley. Later the view from the back of his studio also became the setting for the large Temptation of St Antony etching which was to follow. The choice of artists for the series came from recommendations from other artists. Initially I selected some artists I knew but most I met from recommendations and introductions by artists I was currently working with. Most were happy to let me visit and draw them at work in their studios.

In each studio visit I carried my plates into their work area set them on a table and began drawing directly onto the grounded plates with my etching needle. I initially drew the studio itself and then later after a day or so I drew the artist inside the space I had created. As a collaborative element to the etching project, I left shapes in the etching to correspond with where the artists own art works were situated in the studio. Each of the artists then worked with the etching needle directly onto my plates to draw the details of their own works in those spaces. Invisible Cities

Invisible Cities

The two etchings have direct links to Italo Calvino's novel Invisible Cities first published in Italy in 1972. Each etching corresponds with

the description of the city listed in its title. I made them during a residence at the Frans Masereel Centum in Kasterlee, Belgium in 2004.

The Strand

For a while I was living close to the sea in Townsville and a street along the foreshore known as the Strand. Our children were quite young and I was teaching full time at university so In order to get some work done I decided to use

small etching plates and work directly onto them en plein air. I carried my prepared plates to particular places along the strand and in the port area of Townsville and drew directly onto them with the needle. These works are the result.

The Bridge

Before I moved to Townsville on 1980 I had almost no contact with any indigenous Australians but gradually I have become friends with many people in Townsville and from different communities. In the early 80s a number of the art staff regularly visited our friends in the Murray upper community south of Tully. The Bridge series came about from these associations as well from

visits to a shop/museum operating at the time in Flinders Street run by Christy Meyers. There I learned to play the didgeridoo and became interested in the power and stories behind the artefacts on display. The fictitious narrative for the series is loosely based around the observations and recollections of an aboriginal child born in Townsville under the Victoria Bridge.
